Coral Gables

Coral Gables

Coral Gables, The City Beautiful. That was the vision of George Merrick, the legendary developer who conceived and developed one of the nation’s first planned communities as an urban enclave of refined elegance and gracious sophistication.

Today his farsightedness is evident in virtually every aspect of this thriving community, and many of his original structures grace the city’s winding streets, which were themselves designed to discourage thru-traffic and to reduce congestion.

Home to many leaders in the fields of business, philanthropy and the arts, the Gables is also home to some of its architectural landmarks, notably the 1927 Biltmore Hotel, the tidal Venetian Pool, the Lowe Art Museum and Miracle Mile, the recently resurgent downtown pedestrian shopping and dining area. The new Village of Merrick Park also features a few residences and luxury shopping not seen in the Miami area outside of The Shops at Bal Harbour.

Although new luxury condominiums have recently sprung up in the revitalized downtown area {one of which is home to a recent term-limited Florida Governor}, the Gables is best known for its estates along Old Cutler Road and its gracious Mediterranean Revival Style homes, a few of them built by George Merrick himself.

The City is widely renowned for its First Friday Art Walks, and is also home to the University of Miami and the spectacular Fairchild Botanical Gardens. (Although it’s not as well known and its hours are limited, a visit to Kampong, John Fairchild’s 9-acre residence and gardens, is well worth a visit.)

Today the City Beautiful lives up to both its name and it founder’s vision.
